"Gov. George Pataki, down to his final weeks in office, announced plans Friday (12/15/2006) for a $7 million expansion of the state-run Gore Mountain Ski Center that will enable the Johnsburg attraction to boast having the eighth-largest vertical drop in the eastern United States.
The state will spend an additional $3 million to complete the railroad line connection between Saratoga Springs and North Creek.
Skiers from Saratoga Springs, as well as the Albany and New York City areas, will be able to take the train to North Creek and leave their personal vehicles at home, Pataki said". I've posted the full story below, but here's a link to a pdf file with pictures and an additional story about the project that was published a year ago on November 13, 2005 http://www.adkland.com/GoreExpansion.pdf

An Insider's
guide to the best Cross Country Skiing in the Northeast
By Christopher
Leggett & Woden Teachout
"Cross
Country Skiing at Garnet Hill in the Adirondacks has the easy flow of moving
water. Smooth, wide trails slope outward and downward from the lodge, following
the path of least resistance... Shuttle buses saved the day. Now you can
ski happily to the far reaches of the trail system, secure in the knowledge
that you won't have to struggle back up."
Nature: The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is
to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the
heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that
all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy,
amidst the simple beauty of nature. As long as this exists, and it
certainly always will, I know that then there will always be
comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be.
And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles. Anne Frank (1929–45), German Jewish refugee, diarist. The
Diary of a Young Girl (1947; tr. 1952), entry for 23 Feb. 1944.
